Something I've noticed in my time on the internet, is that their are a number of things that are okay on the internet, at least in certain corners. Blatant racism, homophobic jokes, misogyny, and gore. But the one thing that is not has never been and probably never will be allowed is for someone to be wrong. It was mentioned by another user (whose name escapes me, sorry) that a post on the front page where a minor detail was misidentified garnered tons of responses.
And why is this a thing? Why do people feel the need to be correct at all times? Is there some sort of smug feeling of accomplishment that only exists for internet users? Is it the fact that a large number of IT workers are heavy internet users, and that a fair percentage of IT people, in my experience, are the type of person who must be correct all the time, even if they are not. Or is it the simple fact that on the internet, all information is available at all times?
Have a Ferrari while you ponder the question, for reasons.

You can correct someone and not be a asshole about it, something a lot of people don't understand. If someone is a ass about it, I just point that out to them and move on.

Agreed completely. Almost everything I see on Oppo is like what you said; correct someone in a way that makes it seem like you are teaching someone, instead of demeaning them for one's personal benefit and/or enjoyment.

Because the internet is not a place for discussion and discourse. It is a place just to disagree, dismiss, and post really short clips and gifs.

This sounds like the perfect time for some OCD trolling!

Yes almost. I also like it when you make a over generalization and people take that as fact. . . that shits annoying.

Working in IT I want to correct you on the fact that all IT people are the type of people who must correct someone but wait, oh no, it's a trap. Actually the more my jobs have been IT focused and most of my peers have been IT I couldn't stand them as human beings. Right now I do IT but there are whole bunch of other skillsets that go with it and my peers are a lot better here.
That being said I think the issue comes down to not only the people correcting someone wanting to be right but also the OP not wanting to admit they are wrong. It is understandable though because the commenters will descend on you like wolves if you show weakness. I think it's something that we as users will have to take that chance to be wrong and admit we are wrong.

What you did there.

As an IT person who, to my own dismay is never wrong:
Google/ Bing are always nearby. You should rarely be very wrong ;)
OK, so that was somewhat a joke. Really though, it is amazing how much energy people will put into arguing about something they were told as kids instead of doing basic research.

This is not unique to the Internet — it's just more obvious here.
If you go to a party, and say something factually incorrect to everyone you chat up, eventually you're going to find someone who cares about the subject enough to correct you.
On the Internet, the party is pretty much always big enough that someone will care enough to correct you.
Also, there is a competitiveness to any special interest — there's a hierarchy, and your place in it is determined by how much you know about the subject. On the Internet, there's pretty much always enough people in the club that some of them will care about their place in the hierarchy, and the only way to establish their place is to show everybody else that They Know.
